Weird warm-up
Now we’ve sampled some stories that look at world with a weird eye, let’s loosen up with some free writing!
Exercise #2:
We’re going to free-write using some strange sentences as a prompt. In free-writing, the idea is to write whatever comes into your mind and keep writing. The only rule is to not stop!
Start by writing the sentence: “The X-ray showed her chest was full of helium balloons…” and write whatever comes next!
Write for 3 minutes and then switch to the next sentence. Write for another 3 minutes then switch again. Repeat until you’ve written some for all four sentences! Don’t stop and don’t think too hard! You can use the timer below, just keep resetting it after your 3 minutes are up!
Day Play. We play all day. Night Fight. We fight all night …
I am writing you from inside a body that used to be yours …
If you surrendered to the air, you could ride it …
That was fast, right? The great thing about free-writes is how many words you can get down quickly! Don’t worry if it’s messy or not every line is perfect!
When you’re done, look back over what you’ve written and circle or underline anything that you like, shows promise, or you would like to come back to later!
