A suspenseful scene

Have a look at these extracts from a scene in the book The Other Hand (or Little Bee in the US), by Chris Cleave (it’s a very long scene so I’ve just included some non-consecutive parts of it). What makes this scene suspenseful? For large parts of it, it’s just people talking, and yet the feeling of suspense and dread is overwhelming. It’s worth noting this comes quite far into the book, and is a flashback to something in the past that has been hinted at quite a lot.
