Exercise 5 Body Senses - Here and Now

Run through your body senses one by one now and write them down in detail

What are you seeing? What are you hearing? What are you tasting? What are you smelling? What can you feel? What’s moving?

Right now, in this moment.

For example: right now, I can see my computer screen and beyond it through my window our garden fence and then on the horizon a stand of trees and a grey clouded sky. I can hear my fingers tapping on the keyboard, my dog on the chair behind me gently snoring, a slight ringing in my ears which I associate with silence, the ticking of the radiator. I can taste the tea I’m drinking on the tip of my tongue and on the sides of my tongue the milk in the tea, I can taste saliva in my mouth and the peppermint tang of the lip salve I’ve used for dry lips. I can smell candle wax, and wet dog and the slight tar of hot tea. I can feel my feet on the ground and my bottom in the chair, and that my shoulders are tight, I can feel the wool of my cardigan on my wrists and my finger pads pressing into the computer keys. My fingers are moving as I write, my belly is moving with my breath, I turn my head as I think and look out of the window.

Try and be as detailed as possible, to capture the moment as fully and as accurately as possible.

Read through what you’ve written. Can you see how using all the body senses makes the description real and vivid and brings your experience alive? Did you notice how some of the senses, like smell and taste and touch, help make the description deeper and richer?
