Foot Loose & Fancy Freewriting
Okay, now you’ve built up some metaphors, similes and images and your brain is beginning to buzz with ideas, let’s try something called a freewrite.
Freewriting is when you put pen to paper and let yourself write what ever you want. The only rule is that you are not allowed to stop writing. It doesn’t have to make sense, be pretty, be interesting, it just needs to be words. So set a timer for 5 minutes and using the prompt below try and write as much as you can.
Take your shoe off and draw around your foot. This is your new blank page. Start writing in your foot with the prompt:
‘His/her feet are…’
Then, start describing a character’s feet. Are they small? Are they big? Have they got sharp toe nails? Having they got hairy hobbit feet? Then move onto their ankles, are they skinny? Chubby? Are they wearing socks? What colour are they? Then move up their legs. Do they have hairy legs? Are they wearing jeans or a skirt? Then think about the character’s belly? Is it big and chunky? Or is it rock hard abs? Are they wearing a suit? Or a t shirt? Now think about your characters arms? Are they big, small, what are they used to carrying?
